Sleeping Beauty
옛날에 한 왕과 왕비가 살았는데 슬하에 자식이 없었다. 두 사람은 그 점을 아쉬워하며 늘 이렇게 말했다.
“우리에게 아이를 주소서!”
In times past there lived a king and queen, who said to each other every day of their lives, "Would that we had a child!" and yet they had none.
그러던 어느 날 왕비가 목욕하고 있는데 개구리가 물속에서 폴짝 뛰어 올라왔다. 개구리는 땅바닥에 쪼그리고 앉아 왕비에게 말했다.
But it happened once that when the queen was bathing, there came a frog out of the water, and he squatted on the ground, and said to her,
“왕비님 소원이 이루어질 거예요. 앞으로 일 년 안에 왕비님은 딸을 낳으실 겁니다.”
"Thy wish shall be fulfilled; before a year has gone by, thou shalt bring a daughter into the world."
개구리가 예언한 대로 왕비는 아주 예쁜 딸을 낳았다. 왕은 기쁨에 넘쳐서 성대한 잔치를 열었다.
And as the frog foretold, so it happened; and the queen bore a daughter so beautiful that the king could not contain himself for joy, and he ordained a great feast.
여러 친척과 친구, 지인을 초대한 것은 물론이요, 공주의 탄생을 축하해줄 것 같은 지혜로운 마녀들까지 두루 초대했다.
Not only did he bid to it his relations, friends, and acquaintances, but also the wise women, that they might be kind and favourable to the child.
왕국에 마녀가 열세 명 있었지만 왕은 황금 접시를 열두 개만 준비했다. 그래서 한 마녀는 초대받지 못했다.
There were thirteen of them in his kingdom, but as he had only provided twelve golden plates for them to eat from, one of them had to be left out.
그래도 잔치는 성대하게 치러졌다. 잔치가 끝나갈 무렵, 마녀들이 앞으로 나와 공주에게 축복을 빌어주었다.
However, the feast was celebrated with all splendour; and as it drew to an end, the wise women stood forward to present to the child their wonderful gifts:
첫 번째 마녀는 착한 마음씨를, 두 번째 마녀는 아름다움을, 세 번째 마녀는 재물을 선사했다. 세상 사람들이 바랄만한 소원을 모두 빌어주었다.
one bestowed virtue, one beauty, a third riches, and so on, whatever there is in the world to wish for.
열한 번째 마녀까지 축복을 빌어주었을 때, 초대받지 못한 열세 번째 마녀가 분풀이할 작정으로 불쑥 나타났다. 열세 번째 마녀는 인사도 하지 않고 예도 갖추지 않은 채 큰 소리로 외쳤다.
And when eleven of them had said their say, in came the uninvited thirteenth, burning to revenge herself, and without greeting or respect, she cried with a loud voice,
“공주가 열다섯 살이 되면 물렛가락에 찔려 죽을 것이다.”
그런 다음 한마디도 더 하지 않고 홱 돌아서서 떠나버렸다.
"In the fifteenth year of her age the princess shall prick herself with a spindle and shall fall down dead."
And without speaking one more word she turned away and left the hall.
그 말에 다들 두려워 떠는데 아직 축복을 빌어주지 않은 열두 번째 마녀가 앞으로 나왔다.
Every one was terrified at her saying, when the twelfth came forward, for she had not yet bestowed her gift,
열두 번째 마녀는 사악한 예언을 없애긴 어려웠지만 완화할 순 있었다.
“공주는 죽지 않고 백 년 동안 깊은 잠에 빠질 것입니다.”
and though she could not do away with the evil prophecy, yet she could soften it, so she said,
"The princess shall not die, but fall into a deep sleep for a hundred years."
왕은 불길한 예언에서 공주를 구하고 싶은 마음에 온 나라의 물렛가락을 모두 불태우라고 명했다.
Now the king, being desirous of saving his child even from this misfortune, gave commandment that all the spindles in his kingdom should be burnt up.
공주는 마녀들의 축복 속에서 무럭무럭 자랐다. 아주 사랑스럽고 겸손했으며, 예쁘고 친절하고 영리해서 공주를 본 사람은 누구나 사랑하지 않을 수 없었다.
The maiden grew up, adorned with all the gifts of the wise women; and she was so lovely, modest, sweet, and kind and clever, that no one who saw her could help loving her.
세월이 흘러 공주가 열다섯 살이 된 어느 날, 왕과 왕비가 나라 밖으로 나갔다.
It happened one day, she being already fifteen years old, that the king and queen rode abroad,
성에 홀로 남은 공주는 이곳저곳을 둘러보며 마음 내키는 대로 방과 응접실을 돌아다녔다. 그러다 낡은 탑에 이르렀다.
and the maiden was left behind alone in the castle. She wandered about into all the nooks and corners, and into all the chambers and parlours, as the fancy took her, till at last she came to an old tower.
좁고 구불구불한 계단을 올라가니 작은 문이 나타났다. 자물쇠에는 녹슨 열쇠가 꽂혀 있었다.
She climbed the narrow winding stair which led to a little door, with a rusty key sticking out of the lock;
공주가 열쇠를 돌리자 문이 스르르 열렸다. 작은 방에선 웬 노파가 앉아 물레를 돌리며 부지런히 실을 잣고 있었다.
she turned the key, and the door opened, and there in the little room sat an old woman with a spindle, diligently spinning her flax.
“안녕하세요? 할머니, 무얼 하고 계세요?” 공주가 말을 건넸다.
"Good day, mother," said the princess, "what are you doing?"
“실을 잣고 있단다.” 노파가 고개를 끄덕이며 대답했다.
"I am spinning," answered the old woman, nodding her head.
“이렇게 빨리 돌아가는 것은 뭐예요?”
공주는 이렇게 말하면서 물렛가락을 잡고 돌리기 시작했다.
"What thing is that that twists round so briskly?" asked the maiden, and taking the spindle into her hand she began to spin;
그런데 공주가 물레에 손을 대자마자 사악한 예언이 실행되어 손가락을 찔리고 말았다.
but no sooner had she touched it than the evil prophecy was fulfilled, and she pricked her finger with it.
바로 그 순간 공주는 그곳에 있던 침대에 쓰러져 깊은 잠에 빠져들었다.
In that very moment she fell back upon the bed that stood there, and lay in a deep sleep.
