그러자 잠기운이 성 전체로 퍼져 나갔다. 성에 돌아와 연회장에 있던 왕과 왕비도 금세 잠이 들었고, 함께 있던 신하들도 잠이 들었다.
And this sleep fell upon the whole castle; the king and queen, who had returned and were in the great hall, fell fast asleep, and with them the whole court.
마구간에 있던 말도 잠들었고, 마당에 있던 개와 지붕에 앉아 있던 비둘기, 벽에 붙어 있던 파리까지 잠들었다. 난로에서 타오르던 불꽃도 잠잠해졌다.
The horses in their stalls, the dogs in the yard, the pigeons on the roof, the flies on the wall, the very fire that flickered on the hearth, became still, and slept like the rest;
꼬챙이에 꿰어진 고기도 더 이상 지글거리지 않았다. 실수를 저지른 심부름꾼의 머리카락을 잡아당기려던 요리사도 동작을 멈추고 쿨쿨 잠에 곯아떨어졌다.
and the meat on the spit ceased roasting, and the cook, who was going to pull the scullion's hair for some mistake he had made, let him go, and went to sleep.
바람이 잦아들고 성 주변의 나무에서 나뭇잎 하나 떨어지지 않았다.
And the wind ceased, and not a leaf fell from the trees about the castle.
그러더니 성 주변으로 가시덤불이 자라나 울타리를 쳤다. 덤불은 해가 갈수록 빽빽이 자라나 성 전체를 뒤덮어 버렸다.
Then round about that place there grew a hedge of thorns thicker every year, until at last the whole castle was hidden from view,
결국 지붕 위의 풍향계 외엔 아무것도 보이지 않았다. 그 뒤로 잠자는 아름다운 로자몬드 공주의 소문이 온 세상에 널리 퍼졌다.
and nothing of it could be seen but the vane on the roof. And a rumour went abroad in all that country of the beautiful sleeping Rosamond, for so was the princess called;
이따금 왕자들이 찾아와 가시덤불을 헤치고 성으로 들어가려 했지만 아무도 뜻을 이루지 못했다.
and from time to time many kings' sons came and tried to force their way through the hedge; but it was impossible for them to do so,
가시가 억센 손아귀처럼 서로 꽉 맞물려 있었기 때문이다. 왕자들은 덤불에 갇히면 빠져나오지 못하고 비통하게 죽었다.
for the thorns held fast together like strong hands, and the young men were caught by them, and not being able to get free, there died a lamentable death.
오랜 시간이 흐른 뒤, 한 왕자가 이 나라에 찾아왔다. 왕자는 어느 노인에게서 가시울타리 너머에 있는 성 이야기를 들었다.
Many a long year afterwards there came a king's son into that country, and heard an old man tell how there should be a castle standing behind the hedge of thorns,
성안에는 로자몬드라는 아름다운 공주가 마법에 걸려 백 년 동안 잠들어 있으며, 왕과 왕비를 비롯해 궁중에 있는 모든 것들이 함께 잠들어 있다고 했다.
and that there a beautiful enchanted princess named Rosamond had slept for a hundred years, and with her the king and queen, and the whole court.
노인이 자기 할아버지에게 전해 들은 바로는 여러 왕자가 가시울타리를 뚫고 가려 했지만 번번이 가시에 찔려 비참하게 죽었다고 했다.
The old man had been told by his grandfather that many king's sons had sought to pass the thorn-hedge, but had been caught and pierced by the thorns, and had died a miserable death.
그러자 젊은 왕자가 말했다.
“그래도 저는 두렵지 않습니다. 덤불을 뚫고 들어가 아름다운 로자몬드를 만나겠습니다.”
Then said the young man, "Nevertheless, I do not fear to try; I shall win through and see the lovely Rosamond."
마음씨 착한 노인이 그러지 말라고 말렸지만 왕자는 들으려 하지 않았다.
The good old man tried to dissuade him, but he would not listen to his words.
마침 백 년 동안 잠자던 로자몬드 공주가 깨어날 날이 다가왔다.
For now the hundred years were at an end, and the day had come when Rosamond should be awakened.
왕자가 가시덤불 울타리에 다가가자 가시덤불이 아름답고 커다란 꽃 울타리로 변했다.
When the prince drew near the hedge of thorns, it was changed into a hedge of beautiful large flowers,
꽃 울타리는 왕자가 지나가도록 길을 내주더니 다 지나가자 다시 빽빽하게 울타리를 쳤다.
which parted and bent aside to let him pass, and then closed behind him in a thick hedge.
왕자는 성 마당에서 말들과 점박이 사냥개들이 누워 자는 모습을 보았다. 지붕 위에서 비둘기들이 날갯죽지에 머리를 묻은 채 앉아 있는 모습도 보았다.
When he reached the castle-yard, he saw the horses and brindled hunting-dogs lying asleep, and on the roof the pigeons were sitting with their heads under their wings.
궁전 안으로 들어가니 파리들이 벽에 붙어 자고 있었다. 요리사는 주방에서 심부름꾼을 때리려고 손을 올리고 있었으며, 주방 하녀는 검은 닭을 무릎에 올려놓고 털을 뽑으려 하고 있었다.
And when he came indoors, the flies on the wall were asleep, the cook in the kitchen had his hand uplifted to strike the scullion, and the kitchen-maid had the black fowl on her lap ready to pluck.
왕자가 안으로 더 들어갔더니 홀에선 신하들이 모두 누워 자고, 높은 옥좌에선 왕과 왕비가 자고 있었다.
Then he mounted higher, and saw in the hall the whole court lying asleep, and above them, on their thrones, slept the king and the queen.
더 깊숙이 들어가자, 사방이 너무나 고요해서 자신의 숨소리가 들릴 정도였다.
And still he went farther, and all was so quiet that he could hear his own breathing;
왕자는 드디어 탑에 이르렀다. 구불구불한 계단을 올라가서 작은 방의 문을 열자 로자먼드 공주가 누워 있었다.
and at last he came to the tower, and went up the winding stair, and opened the door of the little room where Rosamond lay.
공주가 어찌나 예쁘고 사랑스럽던지 눈을 뗄 수 없었다. 왕자는 곧 몸을 숙여 공주에게 입을 맞추었다. 그러자 공주가 눈을 뜨더니 왕자를 다정한 눈길로 쳐다보았다.
And when he saw her looking so lovely in her sleep, he could not turn away his eyes; and presently he stooped and kissed her, and she awaked, and opened her eyes, and looked very kindly on him.
공주가 몸을 일으키자 두 사람은 함께 탑에서 내려왔다. 왕과 왕비를 비롯하여 궁정 사람들이 모두 눈을 뜨고는 놀란 얼굴로 서로 바라보았다.
And she rose, and they went forth together, and the king and the queen and whole court waked up, and gazed on each other with great eyes of wonderment.
마당에 있던 말들이 일어나 몸을 부르르 떨었고, 개들도 발딱 일어나 꼬리를 흔들었다.
And the horses in the yard got up and shook themselves, the hounds sprang up and wagged their tails,
지붕에 있던 비둘기들이 날개에 파묻은 고개를 들고 주위를 살피더니 들판으로 푸드덕 날아갔다.
the pigeons on the roof drew their heads from under their wings, looked round, and flew into the field,
벽에 붙어 있던 파리들이 슬금슬금 기어갔고, 잦아 있던 화덕의 불길이 다시 활활 타올라서 고기를 익혔다.
the flies on the wall crept on a little farther, the kitchen fire leapt up and blazed, and cooked the meat,
꼬챙이에 꿰어진 고기가 다시 지글거리며 구워졌다. 요리사가 심부름꾼의 뺨을 찰싹 때리자 비명이 터져 나왔다. 하녀는 닭털을 계속 뽑았다.
the joint on the spit began to roast, the cook gave the scullion such a box on the ear that he roared out, and the maid went on plucking the fowl.
얼마 후 왕자와 로자먼드 공주의 결혼식이 성대하게 열렸다. 두 사람은 생을 마감할 때까지 오래오래 행복하게 살았다.
Then the wedding of the Prince and Rosamond was held with all splendour, and they lived very happily together until their lives' end.
해설: 《잠자는 숲속의 공주》는 전형적인 선과 악의 대립, 인내와 구원의 시간, 운명적 사랑을 담고 있다. 저주로 잠든 공주가 오랜 세월이 지난 후 왕자의 키스로 깨어난다는 서사는, 인간의 삶에서 고난을 견디는 인내와 마침내 찾아오는 구원의 순간을 상징적으로 보여준다. 한편으론 ‘여성은 수동적 존재이고 남성의 구원으로 완성된다’라는 고전적 성 역할이 강하게 드러난다는 점에서 비판의 여지가 있다.
