지푸라기와 숯과 콩

어느 마을에 가난한 할머니가 살았다. 할머니는 콩을 부지런히 모아 두었다가 삶아 먹으려고 아궁이에 불을 지폈다.

There lived in a certain village a poor old woman who had collected a mess of beans, and was going to cook them. So she made a fire on her hearth,

불이 잘 타도록 지푸라기도 한 움큼 집어넣었다.

and, in order to make it burn better, she put in a handful of straw.

콩이 솥 안에서 부글부글 끓어오르기 시작하자 갑자기 한 톨이 밖으로 튀었다. 지푸라기 근처에 떨어진 콩을 아무도 보지 못했다.

When the beans began to bubble in the pot, one of them fell out and lay, never noticed, near a straw which was already there;

얼마 지나지 않아 시뻘건 숯 한 덩어리가 불 밖으로 튀어나와 두 친구에게 합류했다.

soon a red-hot coal jumped out of the fire and joined the pair.

지푸라기가 먼저 입을 열었다.

“이보게 친구들, 어쩌다가 여기에 왔나?”

The straw began first, and said,

"Dear friends, how do you come here?"

숯이 대답했다.

“난 운 좋게 아궁이 밖으로 튀어나왔네. 그냥 있었으면 분명히 죽었을 거야. 불에 타서 허연 재가 됐겠지.”

The coal answered,

"I jumped out of the fire by great good luck, or I should certainly have met with my death. I should have been burned to ashes."

콩이 말했다.

“나도 껍질째 빠져나왔다네. 할머니가 날 솥에 계속 가둬 두었더라면 동료들처럼 푹 퍼져버렸을 거야.”

The bean said,

"I too have come out of it with a whole skin, but if the old woman had kept me in the pot I should have been cooked into a soft mass like my comrades."

“나 역시 참으로 운이 좋았어.” 지푸라기가 말했다. “할머니가 내 형제들을 불살랐어. 육십 가닥의 목숨이 순식간에 연기 속으로 사라졌지. 천만다행히 난 할머니 손가락 사이로 빠져나왔어.”

"Nor should I have met with a better fate," said the straw; "the old woman has turned my brothers into fire and smoke, sixty of them she took up at once and deprived of life. Very luckily I managed to slip through her fingers."

“이제 우린 어떻게 하는 게 좋을까?” 숯이 물었다.

"What had we better do now?" said the coal.

“다들 운 좋게 목숨을 부지했으니,” 콩이 대답했다. “함께 우정을 나누도록 하세. 여기서 꾸물대다가 더 나쁜 일이 생길지 모르니 먼 곳으로 떠나는 거야.”

"I think," answered the bean, "that as we have been so lucky as to escape with our lives, we will join in good fellowship together, and, lest any more bad fortune should happen to us here, we will go abroad into foreign lands."

숯과 지푸라기는 콩의 제안에 기뻐하며 다 같이 길을 나섰다.

The proposal pleased the two others, and forthwith they started on their travels.

얼마 안 가 작은 개울이 나왔다. 그런데 디딤돌이나 다리가 없어서 그들은 어떻게 건너야 할지 난감했다.

Soon they came to a little brook, and as there was no stepping-stone, and no bridge, they could not tell how they were to get to the other side.

마침 지푸라기에게 좋은 생각이 떠올랐다.

“내가 개울을 가로질러 길게 누울게. 나를 다리 삼아 건너가도록 해.”

The straw was struck with a good idea, and said,

"I will lay myself across, so that you can go over me as if I were a bridge!"

지푸라기가 반대편 둑까지 몸을 길게 뻗자 불같은 성격의 숯이 냉큼 나서서 새로 생긴 다리로 올라갔다.

So the straw stretched himself from one bank to the other, and the coal, who was of an ardent nature, quickly trotted up to go over the new-made bridge.

그런데 중간쯤 가다가 다리 밑으로 빠르게 흐르는 물소리를 들었다. 숯은 거센 물소리에 잔뜩 겁을 집어먹고 더 이상 움직이지 못했다.

When, however, she reached the middle, and heard the water rushing past beneath her, she was struck with terror, and stopped, and could get no farther.

그러자 지푸라기에 불이 붙어 두 동강이 나고 말았다. 지푸라기가 개울로 떨어지자 숯도 미끄러졌다. 숯은 물에 닿자마자 치익 소리를 내며 숨을 거두었다.

So the straw began to get burnt, broke in two pieces, and fell in the brook, and the coal slipped down, hissing as she touched the water, and gave up the ghost.

둑에 남아있던 신중한 콩은 그 광경을 보고 웃음을 참을 수 없었다. 계속해서 웃다가 결국 펑 터져버리고 말았다.

The bean, who had prudently remained behind on the bank, could not help laughing at the sight, and not being able to contain herself, went on laughing so excessively that she burst.

마침 그곳을 지나던 재봉사가 개울가에서 쉬었다 가지 않았더라면 콩은 터진 채로 내내 살았을 것이다.

And now would she certainly have been undone for ever, if a tailor on his travels had not by good luck stopped to rest himself by the brook.

다행히 재봉사가 콩을 불쌍히 여겨 실과 바늘로 꿰매 주었다.

As he had a compassionate heart, he took out needle and thread and stitched her together again.

콩은 대단히 점잖게 고맙다고 인사했다. 그런데 재봉사가 까만 실로 꿰매는 바람에 그때부터 콩에는 까만 이음매가 생기고 말았다.

The bean thanked him in the most elegant manner, but as he had sewn her up with black stitches, all beans since then have a black seam.
