One morning, no different from any other, while waiting for the school bus, my child asked me,
“Mom, am I special?”
I smiled and answered,
“Of course. You know the story of sperm and egg, right? Thousands of sperm race toward the egg, and you were the first one to reach it.”
My child quickly replied,
“Mom, that’s the same for all the kids at my school.”
I nodded and said,
“Exactly. You are special, and you are ordinary too.”
It is true. We are all special, and yet all ordinary at the same time. I hope my children will not be bound by either inferiority or superiority. I hope they will not shrink themselves by feeling smaller than others, nor limit themselves by believing they are above them.
As a child who did well in school, I once believed that being born into this world, studying, and preparing for the future meant that I had been given some special mission. But now I know that there is no fixed mission waiting for us. What I do believe is that I want my life to be of some small help to the world. That does not mean some extraordinary role reserved only for children who excel at school. It simply means that if the life I live can be of even a little help to someone else, that is enough for me.
To help someone in need, to be a little kinder to a stranger, to express respect and love to my family, and to think a little more about the common good in my work and in society—that may be enough. I believe that this is how one lives a life that is both special and ordinary, in the best possible way.
