by시원한 바람

I went to the bathhouse with my mom. I followed her into the sauna, going in and out repeatedly. As I sat on the sauna floor, a woman suddenly snapped at me and demanded that I close my legs. I was a college freshman with no sexual experience. I had no concept about what role my body served, and I didn't understand what it meant to have my legs spread open and visible. I was simply a tired child sitting there, trying to endure the hot steam.

I had almost no awareness of what my body meant. Thanks to my parents, who never taught me about gender roles, I grew up freely without such constraints. When I was in high school, I was walking up to the academy when the elevator door opened and a boy from my class stepped in. He was wearing the popular tight-fitting shirt at that time. As he entered, he stared intensely at my chest. That was the first time. I realized people saw me as a woman. It was a surprising experience. I had short hair, wore only pants, and had no interest in relationships at all. The fact that I was seen as a woman was shocking.

When I need to carry heavy things or do difficult work, I don't look for someone else. Whoever does it, the hardship is the same. So at work, I always carried the heavy water bottles myself and put them down. At home, I did all the difficult tasks myself rather than asking someone else.

It's the same with age. At work, I treat people regardless of whether they're older or younger, and I become close with them. I had a great connection with the division managers I'm close with, and we could speak without using formal language. I'd sit on the manager's desk, and we'd talk endlessly about how business was going, whether we're meeting our targets, and when new products would launch.

Even living in Shanghai, it's the same. At work and with my children's friends' parents, there's nothing I need to treat differently based on age. Koreans always asked how old I was, but that was only at that moment. My coworkers only found out my age somehow on my birthday. I don't wonder about their age or feel any need to arrange them in a hierarchy. I keep forgetting my own age, so I'm even less curious about others' ages.

We're all human beings. Why should anyone be above or below anyone else? We're all the same humans. Having breasts or my age increasing each year—does that mean I should do anything differently? Whether someone is older or younger, has breasts or doesn't, it doesn't matter. We're simply humans who happen to live through the same time.
