Vasko Popa (조영필 역)
The story of a story
Once upon a time there was a story
Its end came
Before its beginning
And it beginning came
After its end
Its heroes entered it
After their death
And left it
Before their birth
Its heroes talked
About some earth about some heaven
They said all sorts of things
Only they didn't say
What they themselves didn't know
That they are only heroes in a story
In a story whose end comes
Before its beginning
And whose beginning comes
After its end
(Vasko Popa Selected Poems, translated by Anne Pennington, Penguin Books, 1969)
The tale about a tale
Once upon a time there was a tale
It came to the end
Before its beginning
And it began
After its end
Its heroes entered it
After their death
And left it
Before their birth
Its heroes spoke
Of an earth of a heaven
They spoke a lot
Only they didn't say
What even they didn't know
That they were heroes in a tale
In a tale coming to the end
Before its beginning
And beginning
After its end
(Homage to the lame wolf, translated by Charles Simic, Oberlin College Press, 1987)
