“I need some time for myself.” “Tell me more.” “It’s in the past now.” “Let me try again.”
As we get older, the things that matter in life begin to change. When we are young, we often think about work, money, success, and our children. We are busy every day, and we do not always have time to think about ourselves.
Later in life, we begin to see things differently. Good health becomes more important. A peaceful mind becomes more important, too. We also want good relationships with the people around us.
Sometimes we think about the past. We may have some regrets. We may worry about our children or care too much about what other people think. We may also feel lonely from time to time.
But getting older does not mean that we cannot enjoy life. We can change small things in our daily lives. We can take better care of ourselves, worry less, enjoy simple things, and spend our time in better ways.
Here are ten simple rules I want to remember as I get older. I want to use them in my daily life. They are simple, but I believe they can help me live a happier and more peaceful life.
When I was younger, I did not think much about my health. I worked hard and sometimes stayed up late. Even when I was tired, I kept going. I thought I would always be strong.
These days, I listen to my body more. When I feel tired, I try to get some rest. I try to get enough sleep at night. I also try not to eat too much. I often tell myself, “Take it easy today.”
I try to walk every day. I usually walk around my neighborhood for about 20 or 30 minutes. I do not have to walk fast. I just enjoy the fresh air and look around. After a walk, I usually feel much better.
Health is more important to me now. If I am healthy, I can meet my friends, play table tennis, go out for a nice meal, and enjoy my daily life. I can do the things I like without asking other people for help. Good health gives me freedom.
So I tell myself, “Take care of yourself.” I do not want to wait until I get sick. I want to stay healthy for many more years. I want to keep walking, meeting people, and enjoying my life.
For many years, I spent a lot of time taking care of other people. I worked for my family and worried about my children. I tried to help the people around me. Sometimes I forgot to take care of myself.
I also worried about what other people thought of me. I wanted people to like me. I did not want anyone to think I was selfish. So I often put other people's needs before my own.
These days, I think differently. I know I need time for myself, too. Sometimes I go out for coffee by myself. Sometimes I eat something I really like. I can say, “I just want some time for myself today.”
Taking care of myself does not mean I do not care about other people. I can love my family and still enjoy my own time. I can help others and still get enough rest. I can be kind to others and also be kind to myself.
Sometimes I look at myself and say, “You've worked hard.” I also tell myself, “It's okay to enjoy your life.” I do not need to feel bad about doing something for myself. I want to be my own good friend.
I used to find it hard to say no. When someone asked me for help, I often said yes. Sometimes I was tired or busy, but I still said yes. I did not want to make anyone unhappy.
Sometimes I went to places I did not want to go. I met people even when I wanted to rest. I thought I had to be nice to everyone. But after a while, I started to feel tired.
Now I know that I cannot make everyone happy. Sometimes I say, “Sorry, I can't do it this time.” I may also say, “I already have plans,” or “I need to rest today.” These are simple and polite ways to say no.
I do not need to give a long explanation. Saying no does not make me a bad person. Sometimes I need to protect my time and energy. I can care about someone without saying yes to everything.
My time is important to me now. I want to spend more time doing things I enjoy. I want to be with people who make me feel comfortable. When I need to say no, I can simply say, “Sorry, not this time.”
Parents never stop thinking about their children. Even when our children grow up, we still worry about them. We want them to be healthy and happy. We also want to hear from them often.
Sometimes I may wonder, “Why haven't they called me?” I may feel sad when I do not see them for a long time. I may want them to visit more often. These feelings are natural because I love them.
But my children have their own lives now. They have jobs, families, bills, and many things to do. They may be very busy. Being busy does not mean they do not care about me.
These days, I try to give them more space. Instead of saying, “Why don't you call me?” I can say, “How have you been?” Instead of saying, “When are you coming?” I can say, “Come by when you have time.” It sounds warmer and makes everyone feel better.
I love my children, but I also have my own life. I can meet my friends, enjoy my hobbies, exercise, travel, and learn new things. My children have their lives, and I have mine. I want all of us to live well and be happy.
As I get older, I have more life experience. I have made many decisions and learned many lessons. Because of this, I sometimes want to give advice. I want to tell people what I think is best.
When someone has a problem, I may want to say, “You should do this.” Sometimes I may even think, “I told you so.” But people do not always want advice. Sometimes they just want someone to listen.
These days, I try to listen first. I can say, “I understand.” I can say, “That sounds hard.” I can also ask, “How do you feel about it?” or “What do you want to do?” These simple words can help someone feel better.
This is especially important with my family. My children do not need me to solve every problem. Sometimes they just want to talk. When I listen without judging them, they may feel more comfortable talking to me.
I do not always need to have the answer. Sometimes I just say, “Tell me more.” Then I listen. I am learning that a good listener can be more helpful than a person who always gives advice.
Life can become quieter as we get older. Our children are busy with their own lives. We may not see our friends as often as before. Some days, the phone may not ring very much.
Sometimes I feel lonely. I may think, “Why isn't anyone calling me?” But then I remind myself that being alone is not always a bad thing. Quiet time can also be good for me.
I enjoy having a cup of coffee by myself. I can listen to music, read a book, watch something I like, or take a walk. Sometimes I just sit by the window and relax. I can say, “I'm just taking it easy today.”
Of course, I still enjoy spending time with other people. If I miss a friend, I can call first. I can say, “How have you been?” or “Do you want to grab a coffee?” I do not always have to wait for someone else to call me.
I want to enjoy both kinds of time. I enjoy being with people, but I also enjoy being alone. A quiet day does not have to be a lonely day. These days, I am learning to enjoy my own company.
Sometimes I think about things that happened a long time ago. I remember mistakes I made. I remember things I said and things I wish I had done differently. Sometimes I think, “I wish I could go back.”
Everyone has regrets. I may think, “I should have spent more time with my parents.” I may think, “I should not have said that.” These thoughts can stay in my mind for a long time.
But I cannot change the past. No matter how much I think about yesterday, I cannot go back. So these days, I try to ask myself, “What can I do today?” That question helps me move forward.
If I made a mistake, I can learn from it. If I was not kind enough before, I can be kinder today. If there is someone I miss, I can call that person. I cannot change yesterday, but I can change what I do today.
I do not want to spend today worrying about yesterday. I want to say, “It's in the past now.” I can remember the past without living in it. I learned from it, and now I want to move on.
When I was younger, I thought I needed something big to be happy. I wanted more money, a better job, and a better life. I often thought, “I'll be happy when things get better.”
These days, I see happiness differently. A good breakfast can make me happy. A sunny morning can make me feel good. A warm shower, a cup of coffee, or a short walk can make my day better.
I also enjoy small moments with other people. A short phone call with a friend can make me smile. A nice meal with my family can make me happy. Even a simple “Good morning” from a neighbor can make my day better.
I try not to compare myself with other people too much. Someone may have a bigger house or more money. Someone may travel more often. I tell myself, “That's their life. This is my life.” I want to enjoy what I have.
Before I go to bed, I sometimes think about three good things from my day. Maybe I had a nice meal. Maybe I had a good walk. Maybe I laughed with someone. These little things remind me that an ordinary day can be a happy day.
Sometimes I hear people say, “I'm too old to learn something new.” I understand why they feel that way. Learning may take more time as we get older. We may forget things more easily.
But I do not want to stop learning. I like learning new things. I can learn how to use a new feature on my phone. I can try a new recipe, learn a new game, or visit a new place.
I can also keep learning English. I do not need to learn many difficult words every day. I can learn a few useful sentences and use them in my daily life. I can listen, repeat, and say them again. Little by little, they become easier.
I do not have to be perfect. If I make a mistake, I can say, “Let me try again.” If I forget a word, I can look it up. If something is difficult, I can practice it one more time. That is how I learn.
Learning makes my life more interesting. It gives me something to look forward to. Every day, I can learn one new thing. I may be getting older, but I am still learning, growing, and enjoying new challenges.
When I look back on my life, I remember many things. Some memories make me smile, and some make me sad. I had good times and hard times. I had successes, failures, love, and loss.
Of course, I made mistakes. Sometimes I think, “I wish I had done that differently.” But nobody lives a perfect life. I made the best choices I could at the time. I did not know everything I know today.
These days, I try to be kinder to my younger self. Instead of saying, “Why did I do that?” I can say, “I made a mistake, but I learned from it.” I do not want to spend the rest of my life being angry with myself.
I also want to enjoy what I still have. I can enjoy a meal, take a walk, call a friend, spend time with my family, or learn something new. I can wake up in the morning and say, “Let's make today a good day.”
My life has not been perfect, but it is my life. I have worked hard, loved people, made mistakes, learned lessons, and kept going. When I look back, I want to say, “Life wasn't always easy, but I did my best. I've had a good life.”
Getting older does not mean that the best part of life is over. It can be the start of a different kind of life. I may have less energy than before, but I know myself better now. I know more about what really matters to me.
I do not need everything to be perfect. I do not need everyone to like me. I do not need to solve every problem. I can say, “That's okay,” “I'll think about it,” or “I'll take care of it tomorrow.” I can give myself a little more time.
I can do simple things every day. I can take a walk, call a friend, enjoy a cup of coffee, or learn one new English sentence. I can say no when I need to rest. Small choices can make my day better.
I also want to be thankful for what I still have. Instead of thinking only about what I have lost, I can look at what is still here. I can tell myself, “I have a lot to be thankful for.” A peaceful heart often begins with simple gratitude.
Life is still happening today. My story is not over. I want to take care of myself, enjoy the little things, love the people around me, and keep learning. One day at a time, I want to make the rest of my life a good life.
