Learn English with Yesterday

by김용년

I was happy then. We were together. Things changed.

I was happy then. Things changed. I miss those days.

I remember... / We were... / Things changed... / I felt... / I learned...

Learn English with Yesterday:

Easy English for Memories and Life

Yesterday by The Beatles is a song about looking back at a time that once felt happy and close.

The past seemed simple. Love was near. Life felt easier.

Then something changed. The person he loved was no longer close to him, and the present felt very different from the past.

That feeling makes the song powerful. It begins with happiness, moves through loss and regret, and finally leaves us thinking about what the past still means.

1. Remember a Happier Time

Think about one time in your life when you felt happy and safe.

Maybe you were young. Maybe your family was together. Maybe you had a close friend or someone you loved.

Simple English is enough to begin. You can say, “I was happy then.” “Life was simple.” “We were together.”

This is the first sentence of your memory story: “I remember...” Finish it with one special time from your life.

2. Remember Who Was With You

A memory often becomes special because of the people inside it.

You may remember your parents, your husband or wife, an old friend, a teacher, or someone you once loved deeply.

You can say, “She was kind to me.” “He was my friend.” “We spent a lot of time together.”

Now add the second sentence to your story: “We were...” Tell who was with you or what your relationship was like.

3. Notice When Things Changed

Sometimes life changes slowly. Sometimes it changes very quickly.

A person leaves. A job ends. A family moves. Children grow up. A relationship changes.

Useful English is simple: “Things changed.” “My life changed.” “We went different ways.”

This is the third part of your story. Complete the sentence: “Things changed when...”

4. Say What You Miss

When something is gone, we often understand its value more clearly.

An old song, a photograph, or a familiar place can suddenly bring a person or a moment back into our minds.

You can say, “I miss those days.” “I miss my old friends.” “I miss being with my family.”

Do not try to explain everything. Choose one thing you truly miss and say it in one short sentence.

5. Understand the Feeling of Regret

Memories are not always comfortable.

Sometimes we remember words we wish we had not said. Sometimes we remember words we should have said but did not.

We can say, “I made a mistake.” “I am sorry about that.” “I wish I had done things differently.”

Regret is painful, but it can also teach us something. It shows us what mattered.

6. Talk About How You Felt

Now move from the event to your feelings.

How did you feel when things changed? Were you sad, lonely, confused, angry, or afraid?

You can say, “I felt sad.” “I felt lonely.” “I did not understand what happened.”

Add the fourth sentence to your story: “I felt...” Use one honest feeling.

7. Accept That the Past Is Gone

There comes a time when we understand that we cannot return to yesterday.

We cannot change one old decision. We cannot repeat one lost day. We cannot keep people in exactly the same place forever.

But we can say, “I cannot change the past.” “I accept what happened.” “That time is part of my life.”

Acceptance does not mean forgetting. It means allowing the past to stay in our hearts without controlling our present.

8. Learn Something from the Past

A memory becomes more meaningful when it teaches us something.

A lost relationship may teach us to express love. A mistake may teach us to be more careful. A difficult time may show us how strong we are.

You can say, “I learned a lot.” “That experience changed me.” “I understand it better now.”

This is the fifth sentence of your story: “I learned...” Finish it with one lesson from your past.

9. Return to Today

Yesterday may be beautiful, but today is the day we can still live.

We can call someone today. We can say thank you today. We can spend time with people we love today.

Try saying, “Today is important.” “I am thankful for today.” “I want to enjoy this day.”

The past can teach us how to live the present more carefully.

10. Tell Your Five-Sentence Memory

Now put your story together. Use these five beginnings:

I remember...
We were...
Things changed when...
I felt...
I learned...

Read the five sentences aloud slowly. Do not worry about perfect grammar. What matters is that the memory is yours.

Yesterday reminds us that the past can hold love, regret, sadness, and meaning at the same time. We cannot return to yesterday, but we can remember it with love, learn from it, and live today with more care.

Yesterday (The Beatles)

The song looks back at a time when life felt easier and happier. The singer remembers a past that seemed simple and peaceful.

At that time, love felt close. He did not expect that things would change so much.

Then something happened, and the relationship was no longer the same. The present suddenly felt very different from the past.

He feels confused about why everything changed. He cannot fully understand how the distance between them began.

The song is filled with a strong feeling of loss. He misses the person and the life he had before.

There is also regret. He seems to wonder whether something he said or did may have caused pain.

Because of that regret, the past becomes even more precious. He wants to return to a time before the relationship changed.

But he knows that yesterday cannot come back. The memory is still alive, even though the moment itself is gone.

The song shows how love, sadness, memory, and regret can exist together. A happy past can become painful when we look back from a lonely present.

In the end, Yesterday is a quiet song about losing something important and wishing life could return to the way it once was. It reminds us that some memories stay in the heart long after the moment has passed.

Yesterday (The Beatles)

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away

Now it looks as though they're here to stay

Oh, I believe in yesterday

Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be

There's a shadow hanging over me

Oh, yesterday came suddenly

Why she had to go?

I don't know, she wouldn't say

I said something wrong

Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play

Now I need a place to hide away

Oh, I believe in yesterday

Why she had to go

I don't know, she wouldn't say

I said something wrong

Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play

Now I need a place to hide away

Oh, I believe in yesterday
