Newton spent the final 30 years of his life working at the Royal Mint, helping reform Britain’s currency and combat counterfeiting.
His positions were:
* 1696: Appointed Warden of the Royal Mint.
* 1699: Became Master of the Royal Mint.
* 1696–1698: Helped oversee the Great Recoinage, which replaced old, clipped and worn silver coins.
* Until 1727: Remained Master of the Mint until his death.
One fascinating detail: Newton personally investigated counterfeiters, interviewing witnesses and informants rather than simply delegating the work.
In 1717, he also recommended a change in the value of the gold guinea to 21 shillings, an important development in Britain’s monetary history.
In short: Newton wasn’t only a scientist. He was also a senior government official responsible for protecting and managing Britain’s coinage.
