Last winter, I went to the 2025 Samsung Scholarship alumni year-end gathering at La Casa Hotel in Gangnam, Seoul. It had been one year since I last saw many of them. I was very happy to see them again. They looked healthy and strong. During the year, they worked hard, faced many problems, and kept growing. When I saw their faces, I felt very warm inside. I thought, “You all did a great job this year.” I was also thankful that they came to the gathering during the busy year-end season.
For many years, I was in charge of the scholarship program. So I was very proud to see how much they had grown. Some are doing research. Some are working in companies and other organizations. Some have started their own businesses. They are doing different kinds of work, but they are all helping to make a better future for Korea. Whenever I see their growth, I feel proud and thankful.
I am now over 60. As I get older, I can feel changes in my body and mind. When I was young, I did not think much about small changes in my body. Now I notice them more. My heart has changed, too. Small things can touch me more deeply. I now understand that getting older does not only mean becoming weaker. It can also mean that our hearts become deeper and kinder.
When I was young, I knew that many older people felt lonely. Some felt that they had lost their place in society. But I did not fully understand how they felt. Now that I am getting older, I understand them much better. I sometimes think, “One day, I may feel the same way.” This helps me understand older people with my heart, not only with my mind.
I often think about my older brother. He died in a car accident when he was young. At that time, I was very sad, but I could not cry. I even felt bad because I could not show my sadness. Now I am different. Sometimes a small flower beside the road can touch my heart. Sometimes a soft wind can bring tears to my eyes. I think getting older is not only about becoming weaker. Maybe it is also about opening our hearts more. We can understand other people’s sadness more deeply, and we can feel more thankful for small moments of happiness.
Today, AI and robots are changing the world very quickly. AI tools like ChatGPT are already part of our daily lives. Technology can make our lives easier and help us do many things. But there is one important thing that technology cannot fully replace. People need people. When someone is lonely, we can listen. When someone is sad, we can stay beside them. When someone is having a hard time, we can give them warm words. Technology is powerful, but caring for another person’s heart is still very important.
Korea is becoming an older society very quickly. Many older people face difficult problems. Some lose their jobs or their roles in society. Some live alone and feel lonely. Others have health problems. Some even lose hope in life. This is not only a problem for older people today. One day, we will all grow old. So this is something all of us need to think about together.
This year, I started a YouTube channel for older people. Through this work, I heard many stories from seniors. Many of them feel lonely, sad, and tired. Some even think, “The world does not need me anymore.” Their stories touched my heart deeply. I became sure of one thing. We should not wait for the next generation to solve these problems. We need to start now.
I believe there will be many new chances in services and technology for older people. We need better welfare, education, housing, and health care for seniors. We also need AI and new technology that can make their lives easier, safer, and happier. For a long time, much new technology was made mainly for younger people. But older people may need helpful technology even more. I hope our scholarship alumni use their knowledge, ideas, and skills to make life better for older people. I hope their work can bring warmth, hope, and real help to someone’s life.
As I get older, I understand more deeply how important health is. A car needs regular care. We need to clean it, check it, and take care of it. Our bodies are the same. No matter how busy you are, please take care of your health. And please do not forget to spend time with the people you love. Talk with them, listen to them, and share warm words with them.
The warm feeling from our evening together at La Casa Hotel is still in my heart. We looked at each other, encouraged one another, talked about the year that had passed, and looked forward to a new year with hope. That time together was very special to me. I want to share that warm feeling with everyone reading this. You worked very hard this year. You did a great job. I hope you stay healthy and have a warm and happy year-end with the people you love. Thank you very much.
