Eight Years into Stock Investing: Small Principles I’ve Learned
I started investing the year my second child was born, and somehow, I am now an eight-year investor. I have mainly invested in U.S. stocks, and since the beginning of this year, I have also started buying some Korean stocks. As of now, my U.S. portfolio has returned about 78%, and my Korean portfolio about 35%. Compared to when I first began at the end of 2019, my assets have grown meaningfully. While this year’s strong market has certainly helped, what matters more to me is that my returns and total assets have steadily increased even during slow or stagnant periods.
Of course, I have not always made the right decisions. I have rushed into new positions, taken losses on IPO investments, and sold good companies during downturns only to regret it later. Through these trial-and-error experiences, I developed a set of personal principles. These are not universal rules, and they will not apply in every situation. But for me, they have helped reduce losses and steadily grow my portfolio.
I try not to buy before earnings announcements. It is often better to wait until results are confirmed and buy if the stock dips despite strong performance.
I avoid IPO stocks.
If a stock falls due to external factors such as war, politics, or interest rates, but the company’s earnings growth remains intact, I see it as a buying opportunity.
I continue accumulating companies with consistent earnings growth, and I do not sell unless I find a clearly superior alternative.
I stay cautious about companies or CEOs that appear too frequently on YouTube or social media.
I look for businesses with durable demand and growing earnings, not short-term hype or temporary spikes. Ideally, I find them within industries that are themselves expanding.
I think of stocks as secondhand goods. If no one wants them, prices fall, and they can become hard to sell.
When strong companies are not being mentioned in the news, I quietly accumulate. When headlines focus on how much a stock has risen or predict further gains, it is often already priced at a premium.
A drop in price today is not a reason to sell, and a rise is not a reason to rush in. Opportunities to buy or sell usually come again, though not always.
I do not buy “the next something.” I buy the original.
I do not invest in Bitcoin or crypto-related stocks. This is simply a personal choice.
I do not know whether these principles will continue to hold in the future. But so far, following them has helped me grow my assets without losing direction.
