“Operation Imphal” usually refers to

the Japanese offensive against Imphal in northeast India in 1944, formally part of Operation U-Go, during World War II.

In March 1944, Japan’s 15th Army, commanded by Lt. Gen. Renya Mutaguchi, advanced from Burma into India.

Its main objectives were to seize Imphal, an important British-Indian supply base, and cut the road through Kohima to Dimapur.

Elements of the Indian National Army (INA) also participated alongside Japanese forces.

The Japanese initially surrounded Imphal and cut its land communications.

But the British-Indian Fourteenth Army under Gen. William Slim adopted a crucial strategy: rather than retreat when encircled, Allied units held their positions and were supplied extensively by air.

Japanese logistics, by contrast, became increasingly desperate as food, ammunition, and medical supplies ran out, especially once the monsoon arrived.

Fighting around Imphal and Kohima lasted from March to July 1944.

After the road from Kohima was reopened and the siege of Imphal broken, the Japanese offensive collapsed.

Japanese forces suffered more than 60,000 casualties, including huge losses from starvation and disease.

The result was strategically decisive: Imphal–Kohima stopped Japan’s invasion of India and shifted the initiative permanently to the Allies in the Burma campaign.

Slim’s forces subsequently advanced back into Burma, leading toward its reconquest in 1945.

If you meant a specific aspect—such as the battle map, Japanese plan, INA involvement, commanders, or a day-by-day timeline—I can go into that in detail.
