The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of World War I.
It was fought from July 1 to November 18, 1916, mainly between the British and French armies and the German Empire in northern France.
The Allies launched the offensive partly to relieve pressure on the French at Verdun and partly to break through the German defensive lines.
Before the attack, the British carried out a massive artillery bombardment, but much of the German defensive system survived.
On the first day, July 1, 1916, the British Army suffered catastrophic losses—about 57,000 casualties, including roughly 19,000 dead, making it the bloodiest single day in British military history.
